On August 29, 2012 XDA posted an article about the Official Google Test Release here. I just flashed it to my phone and it is working so fast, smooth, and battery life is excellent. Who knows how long Samsung and/or Verizon will take to push the official update to our phones. It was a simple process, but I had to click thru and read different forums to get it done. I’m going to attempt to put everything you need in one place.
1.) You will need to Download and Install the GNex TOOLKIT which includes: Drivers, Backup, Unlock, Root, CWM, Flash, Mods + MUCH MORE.
2.) Open the GNex Toolkit and choose your model (GSM, CDMA, Verizon, Sprint, etc) You can check this on your phone by going to Settings > About Phone > Android Version/Build Number. Mine was #14 Android 4.0.4 Build IMM76K
3.) Make sure all drivers are installed (Option #1) and your phone is connected via USB. (USB Debugging on: Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging)
4.) Choose (1-Click For All) #8 which will Unlock your Bootloader, Root your phone, Rename Recovery Restore Files, Flash Recovery, and install BusyBox on your phone.
5.) Follow all the prompts as your phone may restart and need you to put it back into USB Debugging mode to continue. I have a previous Galaxy Nexus Root Tutorial here if you need more in-depth help here.
6.) You should now be rooted and have super user installed in your app drawer. You will need to download the OTA (over the air) updates to you phone so you can flash them from recovery. This was my process since I started on build IMM76K > IMM76Q > JRO03O
mysid <== for toro (Verizon) devices only
- mysid IMM76Q from IMM76K: Download Here – Note: From what we can tell, this update does nothing besides disable local search from the search bar.
- mysid JRO03O from IMM76Q: Download Here – Note: this is a leaked/testing build.
7.) Assuming you downloaded the above files from step 6 to your phone you will need to flash into recovery to install from zip. Easiest way I find to flash into recovery or ClockWorkMod is to download RomManager from the Google Play Store, otherwise you can turn your phone off and hold down both the power button and volume down button together.
8.) Install from sd card and zip. Find you file and do it in the correct order. Yours might be different, but once again mine was IMM76K > IMM76Q > JRO03O.
9.) Enjoy all the Jelly Bean goodness. I’ve had it for a day and a half now and am loving it. Best Android OS to date!
